WHAT DO JILL STEIN, GARY JOHNSON, AND ROSEANNE BARR HAVE IN COMMON?
They’re Challenging the Two-Party Establishment in Third Parties
“It’s time for a new political party,” according to John F. Kimberling, author of WHAT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS(Los Angeles, CA) September 26, 2012 – What do people like Jill Stein, Gary Johnson, and Roseanne Barr have in common? They are all running for the top political office in the country as nominees of minor political parties. And according to some polls, more people are paying attention to them. This year’s election has highlighted the bipartisan consensus between the two major parties and exposed how little the Republican and Democratic parties differ from each other. “The Republican and Democratic parties are really very much alike, and neither party is willing or able to offer a substantive and acceptable alternative to the status quo politics,” says John F. Kimberling, author of WHAT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS: A NEW POLITICAL PARTY (Polimedia Publishing, 2012, www.whatthiscountryneeds.net). He continues, “But as we can see, there is a definite hunger and a need in this country for a new approach to governance, and I predict that the next decade will see the rise of several compelling alternatives—a third political party.”
Kimberling, a highly respective lawyer for three decades and who has held leadership positions in both the Republican and Democratic parties at different times, knows what goes into growing an effective political party. The first step is to consolidate all efforts between the minor political parties to reach a broad multi-partisan consensus: “A starting point for organization of our new third party would be to organize a convention or a conference of the leaders of existing national third parties,” says Kimberling. “While the beliefs, goals, and platforms of these parties differ in many aspects from the platform we have set forth here for our new party, these parties advocate certain goals which we envision for our new third party,” he adds.
Kimberling lays out a challenge to this new political party, “We must stir the imagination of those millions of American citizens who do not bother to vote. We need to excite them and get their participation by showing solutions to our problems. We need to show them how to change things so they can care for their families and provide for their future. My book is a manifesto for this new political party and a practical ‘how-to-do-it’ manual to create a lasting change in this country.”
But even if the intent is not to create a new political party, the Gary Johnsons, Jill Steins, and Roseanne Barrs of this country could take a page or two from Kimberling’s book. “They might not succeed, but at least they took a stand and voters who are paying attention are taking notice. The next question they ought to be asking themselves should be, ‘What’s next?’ and ‘How can I reach more voters?’”
Kimberling goes into great detail in his book about the most pressing issues a new political party must solve if it were to succeed. Kimberling’s What This Country Needs is a manifesto of change that refuses to accept that powerful political and financial forces can take the country away from its people. It lays out a blueprint for a new third party to give the voters the tools they need to reshape the political process and point the way in a new direction and to a better future for the entire country.
